Brandon Backe had a strong outing and first baseman Mark Teixeira hit a
homerun as the San Diego Padres beat the St. Louis Cardinals in 10 innings by
a score of 5 to 4.
The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. San Diego ended up winning it
in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Garret Anderson lined a
single. Nick Hundley stepped into the batter's box and he singled. Jolbert
Cabrera got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Orlando Hudson
followed and he slapped a base-hit giving San Diego the win much to the
delight of the home town crowd. San Diego ended up with 13 hits for the game
while St. Louis had 5.
Backe(3-2) got the win allowing no runs in 3 innings. Paul Byrd(0-1) was
charged with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 12 hits and 2 walks in 9
and 1/3 innings.
With this win, San Diego has a division leading 37-25 record. They have been
7-3 lately. With this loss, St. Louis has a 2-3 record of late, 2-3 overall.
