First baseman Ryan Shealy connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI as the
Atlanta Braves outscored the San Diego Padres in 11 innings 7 to 5.
Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Atlanta
pulled the game out in the 11th inning. Shealy led off and he stroked a
base-hit. Aramis Ramirez got his chance to keep things going, but he went
down on strikes. Kelly Shoppach then blasted a two-run home run (his 20th of
the season) making Atlanta the winners and sending the 46,062 fans home
happy. San Diego had 15 hits in the game while Atlanta had 10, but Atlanta
had the more timely hits.
Jerry Blevins(2-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Chad
Qualls(0-1) suffered the loss in relief. He pitched 1/3 of an inning
allowing 2 hits and no walks.
With this win, Atlanta has a division leading 76-37 record. They have been
6-4 lately. With this loss, San Diego has a 2-7 record of late, 3-6, worst
in the division overall.
