Edgar Renteria blasted 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Joe Blanton went the
distance at Busch Stadium as the San Diego Padres beat the reeling St. Louis
Cardinals by the count of 8 to 2.
Renteria enjoyed a big day at the plate. He blasted a solo shot in the 4th
inning and belted a three-run homer (his 2nd of the season) in the 6th
inning. San Diego had 14 hits for the afternoon.
Blanton(1-0) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. The losing
pitcher was Sidney Ponson(0-5). He got hit pretty hard, allowing 9 hits and
2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.
