Shortstop Edgar Renteria had 4 hits and 4 RBI as the San Diego Padres defeated
the New York (NL) Mets 6 to 4 at Shea Stadium.

San Diego went ahead for good in the 3rd inning scoring one runner on 2 hits.
New York (NL) made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.

Chris Volstad(1-0) got the win allowing 3 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Kenny
Rogers(2-4) took the loss. 'You have to give New York (NL) credit, they
fought us tough to the end' Tim Stoops said. 'It could have gone either way,
but I'm glad we pulled out the victory.'
