Chris Sampson went 9 strong innings as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the San
Diego Padres by a score of 1 to 0 at Petco Park.
The game was decided in the top of the 9th inning. After two outs Garrett
Atkins laced a base-hit. Bobby Abreu stepped up next and he slapped a
one-base hit. Robinson Cano then lined a single. Cano stole second with
some aggressive base running. Cincinnati managed 8 hits in their victory.
Sampson(1-0) went the distance for the shutout. Brandon Backe(3-4) was the
losing pitcher in relief. He gave up 3 hits and no walks in 1/3 of an
inning.
